This Date In Royals History–1969 Edition: March 21

In what was becoming a bad trend, a late-inning error led to a Royals loss, as Minnesota took a 3-2 walkoff win in Orlando.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the ninth, Twins third baseman Ron Clark reached on a throwing error by shortstop Jackie Hernandez. Clark wound up at second and scored the winning run on a George Mitterwald single.

This was the third straight game where the Royals had given up the winning runs due at least partially to a defensive miscue.

On offense, Kansas City was held to six hits, with outfielder George Spriggs picking up three of them. Hernandez did have an RBI single and a stolen base, but the Royals were stymied by Twins starter Jim Kaat and three relievers. As for the pitchers, starter Mike Hedlund allowed two runs in four innings, while reliever Jon Warden pitched two scoreless innings and reliever Steve Jones allowed just the one unearned run in his third inning.
