A costly defensive misplay keyed Detroit’s 3-2 win over the Royals in Fort Myers.

With Roger Nelson on the mound, Willie Wilson misplayed a fly ball off the bat of Tim Corcoran. The Tigers followed that with walks by Jerry Manuel and Steve Kemp. Jason Thompson drove in two runs with a single, and John Wockenfuss added an RBI double.

Kansas City pitchers Andy Hassler and Marty Pattin combined to shut out the Tigers for seven innings.

Offensively, second baseman Frank White had three hits, while catcher Darrell Porter added two for the Royals.

Kansas City fell to 8-7 in spring training with the loss.
