This Date In Royals History–1977 Edition: March 30

The Royals scored in the top of the ninth to pick up a 5-4 win over the Phillies in Clearwater.

John Wathan singled in the ninth to drive in Frank White with the eventual game-winner. White drew a walk to start the inning.

While Kansas City enjoyed solid relief outings from Steve Mingori and Doug Bird, there was concern about starter Dennis Leonard, who allowed 10 hits in his five innings. Leonard was also responsible for all four runs Philadelphia scored. Leonard had pitched poorly all spring and had also struggled down the stretch in 1976, although he still led the team in wins.

The win improved the Royals’ record to 14-8.

Off the field, the Royals sent pitchers Dave Hasbach and Greg Shanahan to minor-league camp. That left Kansas City’s roster at 31 players with Opening Day just over a week away.
