This Date In Royals History–1977 Edition: October 4

Another off day for the Royals as they waited for the ALCS to begin in New York.

In the NLCS, Philadelphia captured Game One, scoring two runs in the ninth for a 7-5 victory over the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Singles by Bake McBride, Larry Bowa, and Mike Schmidt produced the go-ahead run, and a balk by the Dodgers’ Elias Sosa brought in the insurance run. The win was the first postseason victory for the Phillies since they won the first game of the 1915 World Series behind Pete Alexander. The Phils had then lost the next four, were swept by the Yankees in the 1950 Series, and swept by Cincinnati in the 1976 NLCS.

Today’s birthdays: John Wathan (1949), Charlie Leibrandt (1956), Tony Ferreira (1962), Chris James (1962), Jackson Kowar (1996)
